Rationale for a Lunar Liquid Mirror

چکیده

A study has been made of the feasibility and scientific potential of a 20 – 100 m aperture astronomical telescope at the lunar pole, with its primary mirror made of spinning liquid at < 100K. Such a telescope, equipped with imaging and multiplexed spectroscopic instruments for a deep infrared survey, would be revolutionary in its power to study the distant universe, including the formation of the first stars and their assembly into galaxies.

Improvements of VIIRS and MODIS Solar Diffuser and Lunar Calibration

Both VIIRS and MODIS instruments use solar diffuser (SD) and lunar observations to calibrate their reflective solar bands (RSB). A solar diffuser stability monitor (SDSM) is used to track the SD on-orbit degradation. On-orbit observations have shown similar wavelength-dependent SD degradation (larger at shorter VIS wavelengths) and SDSM detector response degradation (larger at longer NIR wavele...

Back to the Moon: The Scientific Rationale for Resuming Lunar Surface Exploration

The lunar geological record has much to tell us about the earliest history of the Solar System, the origin and evolution of the Earth-Moon system, the geological evolution of rocky planets, and the near-Earth cosmic environment throughout Solar System history. In addition, the lunar surface offers outstanding opportunities for research in astronomy, astrobiology, fundamental physics, life scien...

Viscosity and Structure of a Late Lunar Magma Ocean Liquid: Implications for the Purity of Ferroan Anorthosites and the Dynamics of a Crystallizing Magma Ocean

The current paradigm argues the Moon formed after a giant impact that produced a deep lunar magma ocean (LMO). After a period of turbulent convection, the LMO experienced fractional crystallization, causing the initially peridotitic liquid to evolve to a plagioclase-saturated ferrobasalt. The lunar crust, much of which comprises 93-98% pure anorthosite [1,2], formed by flotation of positively b...

The Behavior of Thorium in Lunar Picritic Magmas: Implications for the Bulk Thorium Content of the Lunar Mantle and Lunar Heat Flow

Introduction: Previous studies of heat flow from the lunar mantle have suggested that the amount of heat flow is strongly dependent on the abundance of radioactive isotopes in the mantle and is at least loosely correlated with Th content [1,2]. Measurements of heat flow from the Apollo missions had been used to imply that those measurements could be extended outside of KREEP terrains; however, ...

Chemical Fractionation after the Moon-forming Giant

Introduction: The Moon is generally thought to have formed from a circumterrestrial disk generated by the impact of a Mars-sized body onto a nearly-formed Earth [1]. The gravitational energy released in such an event is sufficent to completely melt and partially vaporize the Earth and lunar-forming material. This fluid phase of the evolution is not well understood, but may have delayed lunar ac...
